VMS:
“When did you start writing and performing your music.
What’s your backstory and current lineup.”

The Hate:
“The band started as a solo project around 2019ish? After a recent band break up, I had time/riffs that were collecting in my cranium. I wrote and recorded 2 songs, “Forever Ender” and “White Noise” at my home studio. I had never sung for a band before, but I put feelers out to see if anyone was interested in starting something up with the 2 jams I had ready to go.

I Didn’t have much success ’til early 2020 when Jeremy Tunender (Drums) and Andrew Houle (2nd Guitar) whom I new from a previous band Hand of Doubt. The 3 of us clicked immediately. We jammed sans bass for about a year until Charlie Blasco, whom I also new from a previous band Narrowed, decided to add his long hair and attitude to our freshly formed gang.

We wrote and recorded an EP, played several shows, until Andrew decided to part ways. We have since been a “power trio” as Charlie likes to put it, and it feels like this will be how the band will stay… unless we find a REALLY good kazoo player.”

VMS:
“What artist or bands inspire you and your sound.”

The Hate:
“Like most bands we all have our own inspirations, but the correct answer is Nirvana. Anything else out of Charlie or Jeremy’s mouths are lies!”

VMS:
“What’s your writing process and inspiration for your lyrics.”

The Hate:
“I’m literally thee worst lyricist ever to lyric. My lyrics are anything but profound and usually just feelings I happen to have the brief moments I have for writing. As lame as it sounds most songs are about how much I love my wife. YUK.”

VMS:
“I love your songs “Forever Ender”, “White Noise”, and “Rust on Rot”.
What is the inspiration or story behind these songs.”

The Hate:
“”Forever Ender”, “White Noise” and “Rust on Rot”… come to think of it, the entire EP, were written about a previous relationship and the loss of friends after it had ended. It was a huge mess and from such occurrences I realized who my real friends were. You know that whole thing.”

Listen to “Forever Ender”, “White Noise”, and “Rust on Rot” on Spotify:

VMS:
“Tell me about your LP: “Wasted”, and your new song “None of These Words Are in the Bible”.”
What was the inspiration, process of writing it and what can we expect thematically and the evolution of your sound from your previous album.”

The Hate:
“”Wasted” We are extremely proud of, and excited for, this record. We recorded it with the almighty Alex Estrada of Joyce Manor and Touche Amore fame at his studio The Pale Moon Ranch in CA.

“NOTWAITB” was a response to being a part of an overbearing church as a kid. Like many kids I sort of inherited religion from my family, being told what to believe, how to think and feel. Luckily I got out of it and wrote some music and words about it.

Listen to “None of These Words Are in the Bible” on Spotify:

We’ve definitely evolved sonically, with being a 3 piece now and getting to know how we all act and react to the stuff we come up with. You can expect heavy riffs. You can expect brutal bass tones. You can expect guttural vocals. And you can expect at least 4 or 5 people at our shows.”

Listen to “Wasted” on Spotify:

VMS:
“Which local artist would you like to work with and why.”

The Hate:
“There are way too many bands in this town to even think about this question! I think it would be fun to play a country fest or maybe a pop punk show. Just to see how quick we would get a beer thrown at us or something.”

VMS:
“What’s your overall theme or message of your music.”

The Hate:
“We have a bit of a dark vibe, but that’s just the nature of the genre. We don’t have any sort of message. I don’t think we are all that special or have anything relevant to say, but often times people come up with their own relevance or things they can connect with or relate to, and I think that’s actually more important than anything we’re trying to say.”

VMS:
“Do you have a favorite song that you like to perform.”

The Hate:
“My personal favorite is “All I Can Do” from the new record. It’s heavy, mathy at times, and fun to play.”

VMS:
“Do you have any crazy or interesting stories from working in the music scene.”

The Hate:
“We recently played a show at the Dive Bar with Will Haven. We were the opening band of a 5 band bill, so naturally we were last to sound check. the 2 touring bands sound check. All good.

3rd band loads in and starts their sound check. They had an impressive amount of gear including an in-ears system. They attempt to check their gear and in ears for roughly 45 minutes which felt like a lifetime.

They end up not getting anything to work and decide to load off stage and line check when they play. At this point the sounds guy informs us they are skipping the 2nd band and we are up.

He then informs us that he will now be teaching someone else how to run sound and perform a sound check, when the show is already extremely behind schedule. After we pulled all our hair out we eventually got to play our music.”

VMS:
“What does the future hold for The Hate.”

The Hate:
“Now that the record is out we’re trying to play live as much as we can. Not only in Vegas but surrounding areas, so hit us up!!”

VMS:
“What do you want your audience to feel and experience at one of your live shows.”

The Hate:
“Emotion. Music is meant to evoke emotion. Anything else is trivial.”

Vegas Music Scene Thoughts:

From 2022 to 2024 The Hate has evolved pretty fast in just a couple of years and it’s fascinating to listen to in their new LP: “Wasted”. They started out as very solid band and had some wonderful songs about loss and friendship in their self titled EP, but they come out guns blazing with their new album. The evolution of their sound, lyrics, and musicianship is amazing. They are laying everything out for the listener, with songs like “None of These Words Are in the Bible” talking the the hypocrisy of religion and I feel it’s safe to say that it feels like the whole album “Wasted” is about loss, the dissolution of idolatry and how to free yourself and find out who you are in the world, and finding your own voice and thoughts.

As someone like myself who has personally struggled with the concept of religion, I really identify with this album and I can truly feel their passion and anger in their very guttural singing, especially in the painfully beautiful song “Let Me Go”, I appreciate how real and honest their songwriting is.

Beside’s the themes of the album, what I love about The Hate in general is how from their EP to now they have pushed their musicianship and themselves to the next level. Don’t get me wrong, they were already solid right out the gate in 2022, but I can definitely hear the sick ass growth in just two years, and it’s truly amazing to hear. That magnetic energy they have in their songs, mixed with that gritty, intense sound that slaps you in the face, is what separates them from the rest. I know they are just getting this journey started but I feel they truly have the drive you need to survive in this industry.

I absolutely love where they have come from, how far they have come, and I cannot wait to see the next evolution of this already beautifully intense band. That’s why I am proud to have them as my Artist of the Week!

I encourage you to go see that amazing music intensity in person at their show at The Griffin on December 7th! Please check out their Instagram for more information.
