Darby O’Gill and the Little People Consists of:
Darby O’Gill: Vocals and guitar.
Ringo Malarkey: Accordion and vocals.
Mr Green: Fiddle and Vocals.
Ewan McKeister: Drums and vocals.
Jock O’Pastorius: Bass and Vocals.
On their beginnings:
“When I started the act I wanted it to be what I would like to see if I went to a pub. Loud, raunchy, funny, badass. One foot in traditional folk, the other in fuck-you punk. I wanted each member of the band to be a character, as if you could make a movie about us. I wanted our song list to be really wacky and not like the song list of your typical cover band. I basically wanted to play music for a living, but I didn’t wanna have to play goddamn Margaritaville every fucking night (We still have to play it occasionally though).”
I absolutely love their album “Traditional Irish Dance Music Vol. 1”.
It has a wonderful combination of Traditional Celtic, Punk, Hip Hop Covers, but they always bring their own style. This album will make you laugh and also dance your ass off. My favorite songs off the album are “Gates of Hell”, Their Awesome version of Radiohead’s “Creep” and “Whiskey in the Jar”
Darby on his favorite song on “Traditional Irish Dance Music Vol.1”:
“My personal favorite track is “Ocean Away”. It was a sort of homage to one of my favorite songwriters Shane MacGowan of The Pogues and his song “Fairytale of New York.”

On their Inspirations:
“As far as inspirations go, they really run the gambit. As mentioned previously I have always loved The Pogues, Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphy’s, obviously. I know Ringo has been a lifelong fan of They Might Be Giants. We find inspiration in a lot of strange places. It’s always really funny whenever we do a hip hop song in the style of Celtic Folk. Or a real butt rocker like “Sweet Child O’ Mine”.”
On their live shows:
“We just want you to come out, drink a bunch of booze, and have a glorious time. And I think we really accomplish that. We craft our jokes and stage antics just as much as we craft the music to bring the Pub Folk something more than just the average bar band. Over 20 years in this crazy business, we must be doing something right.”
On a New Album:
“We have been seriously kicking around the idea of making an album of Sea Shanties. The working title is “Songs of the Sea and The Sand”. Our aim is to make it our first Vinyl release with a very limited run. But we’ll see if our lazy asses ever get around to that. We’ll try.”
What I’ve always loved about Darby O’Gill and the Little People, is not only are they wonderful musicians, and incredibly hilarious as fuck, but you can tell they genuinely love what they do, their energy live is truly infectious. Between their sense of humor, wonderful stage presence and incredibly catchy songs, you will always have a great time with them. If you haven’t been to one of their shows I strongly encourage you to see these Las Vegas Legends, they are truly a one of a kind experience. That’s why I made them my VMS Artist of the Week.
